Welcome letter 

On June 6th, 2021, Mexico will hold its largest elections in the history of the country, by celebrating federal and local elections in the 32 states of the nation. Mexico City will renew the positions of mayoralties, councils, and all 66 seats of the local Congress. Also, for the first-time a migrant representative will be chosen, and he or she will be a part of the legislative power of the city.
For this reason, the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM for its acronym in Spanish) has developed this platform. Its goal is to enrich the experience of observation made by electoral observers and foreign visitors alike. This will set an important precedent for similar experiences henceforth. Without a doubt, this will also be favorable for the strengthening and continuous enhancing of the activities this electoral institute performs.
The democratic transitions and progress experienced regarding electoral organization have been accompanied by the emergence of new challenges –such as the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus–, thus modifying society's daily life structures. Electoral institutions have not been exempted from transforming its processes and protocols. At IECM we are convinced that innovating and finding better solutions that benefit citizens and democracy itself is the best answer to current adversities.
IECM, as the electoral authority responsible for organizing elections in Mexico City, has determined the objective of establishing the necessary strategies to perform its duties with integrity, complying with the highest quality standards, and thus continuously improving its processes. Transparency is one of the basic elements that confer legitimacy to elections. Because of this, IECM has focused on developing accompaniment programs so that civil society and foreign visitors are able to observe the electoral processes it organizes.
On this occasion, and considering the worldwide sanitary emergency that impedes the traditional organization of this kind of programs, IECM has worked to find a way to adapt to new circumstances while minimizing risks for observers and international specialists. To achieve this goal, it has created this informative platform, which will allow to follow the different stages of the Local Electoral Process 2020-2021. We are absolutely certain that this platform may constitute a valuable asset for in-person missions, and might also work as a way to virtually carry out some of the activities that are usually included in accompaniment programs.
We invite you to navigate through the different sections of this website and get to know the work IECM is performing. Be a witness and, at the same time, take part in this unprecedented electoral process in Mexico City. This experience will be surely enriching for both yourself and this electoral institute. Notwithstanding the distance, we can contribute with our expertise, to make of this an exercise with successful results that will benefit the democracy of our city.
